The beauty of Mission San Juan Capistrano is visible year round. Read on to see what Earth Day fun makes Missing San Juan Capistrano a must-visit during the spring.

We received complimentary admission to facilitate this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My 9-year-old is in the middle of her study of the missions as part of her 4th grade curriculum. She was so enthralled by seeing the things she’s learning about in the classroom in real life.

In my past career as a 4th grade teacher, Mission San Juan Capistrano was an annual field trip via the train. As a mom, I knew the ability to walk in the footsteps of the Native Americans and missionaries would add depth to the curriculum. If your child’s school doesn’t visit the mission, it’s an absolute must for SoCal kids.

Being able to visit for the 1st ever Earth Day Celebration at Mission Juan Capistrano was a lovely treat! Exploring the beauty of nature in one of the most gorgeous historical locations in Orange County was a great family outing.

Highlights from Earth Day at Mission San Juan Capistrano

Our day began with an in-depth butterfly presentation. Thankfully we say many butterflies flying around the mission during our visit. Knowing that the butterfly population is dwindling, it makes each appearance feel so precious.

There were also representatives providing information about bees. My kids have been obsessed with bees since a swarm took a break in our plum tree last spring. There were what felt like thousands living in our front yard for about a day and a half.

In addition to the butterfly and bee presentations, the gardens were open for sampling. With the garden tour stops, we learned about gourds and carrying water. The gardens were one of the kids’ top 3 favorite things!

The kids and I also were able to sample various items grown at the mission like various kinds of peas and strawberries. The kids smelled their way through the herb planter, learning how things like mint could be used.

Native American singers gifted us with song while we learned how to weave baskets. These hands-on opportunities are such a great teaching tool, but also amazing memory makers.

One of the most iconic places within the mission is the large fountain in the gorgeous courtyard. Filled with koi fish, it’s a wonderful spot to sit and reflect. During Earth Day, there were even koi fish feedings!

With the large amount of rain in Southern California this year, the wildflowers have been in a superbloom. You can skip the drive to Lake Elsinore or the poppy reserve and head to Mission San Juan Capistrano. The grounds are beautifully maintained, largely by volunteers. Poppy, of course, loved the poppies. She even received a package of seeds to bring home.

I mentioned earlier that the garden tour was a big hit with my children (aged 5, 9, and 11). Their other favorite elements were exploring the flowers and the exploring the mission. The grounds are perfect for an afternoon picnic or leisurely stroll.

Celebrating Earth Day at the mission was a wonderful combination of Californian history and the state’s modern beauty. For tickets and more information, go to Mission San Juan Capistrano.

Where can you find gorgeous pieces of California history and the most amazing tacos? San Juan Capistrano is home to both the mission, plus a variety of family-friendly activities. Spend the day exploring and end it with a hand-crafted cocktail. Check out things to do in San Juan Capistrano.

All thoughts and opinions are my own. Please read my Disclosure Policy for more information.

Having spent the majority of my life Orange County, I love spending time exploring each nook and cranny of our fair county. With everything from beaches to mountains nearby, there truly is something for everyone in the family. Located in southern Orange County, San Juan Capistrano likewise offers diverse entertainment and dining. The city is easily accessible by freeway, by taking the 5 freeway. But a more interesting way to arrive in town is to take the train. The San Juan Capistrano Metrolink Station drops riders off in the midst of the hustle and bustle of fun.

Things to Do in San Juan Capistrano

Zoomars

Perfect for families, Zoomars Petting Zoo is a lovely outing to enjoy the company of small animals like goats and guinea pigs. Admission charges are $10 for adults, $8 for children. The highlight of the visit is feeding the animals. Baskets of feed are available for purchase. You can share carrots with guinea pigs in a confined pen, which is great for younger children. There are also goats, bunnies, pigs, and more! Take a trot around the ring on a pony ride, or climb aboard the small train for a ride around the petting zoo.

Jump into the corn kernel pit for sensory play or pan for gold. It’s a darling way to connect with animals and a huge hit with kids. You can get more information on their site.

Antique Shopping

Spend a few hours strolling through San Juan’s antique stores in pursuit of classic pieces at reasonable prices. There are dozens of options so you’re guaranteed to find a vintage treasure.

Visit Mission San Juan Capistrano

Founded in 1775, Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of the 21 missions founded in Alta California by the Catholic Church. Upon seeing its beauty, you’ll concur it deserves its nickname “The Jewel of the Missions.” Here families can take a step back in time to learn about the lives of the Native Americans and Spanish priests who called the mission land home.

(Cooper Carrie)

Audio and guided tours are available, plus themed tours for various interests such as the Art Tour. Mass was previously held by Fr. Junipero Serra in the now conserved Serra Chapel where services are still held to this day.

In addition to the curated historical experience, guests can take in the beauty of the mission grounds. The roses and gorgeous courtyard fountain make for a lovely backdrop to your day.

Welcome the Swallows

One truly unique experience surround Mission San Juan Capistrano is the visits from the swallows. For years, the birds migrated from Argentina to the mission. Recent years saw a decline in numbers due to urbanization, yet the mission has enticed the winged visitors back. Each year the return of the birds is cause for large celebration.

(Carolyn Carrie)

Los Rios Historic District

To continue the historic stroll through town, you’ll want to tour the Los Rios Historic District. Between Del Obispo and Mission Streets, you will see adobe buildings dating back to 1794. It’s one of the oldest neighborhoods in Orange County.

(Patrick Carrie)

Plus, the aged doors and buildings make for great photo backdrops.

Where to Eat in San Juan Capistrano

Strolling through town, I was reminded of the historic charm San Juan Capistrano offers. With so many cute places to explore, one may work up an appetite.

I was thrilled to be invited to the ribbon cutting of Bueno Bueno Mexican Kitchen. Those familiar with the Sundried Tomato American Bistro will be the new sister restaurant within the entertainment district of San Juan Capistrano. With the motto “Panza Llena Corazon Contento” or “Full Belly Happy Heart,” Bueno Bueno Mexican Kitchen offers upscale fast casual. Upon entering the restaurant you’ll note the gigantic menu boards featuring everything from street tacos made with housemade tortillas to my 2018 obsession, elote.

The staff welcomed me into the fold with one of their cocktails especiales, an insanely perfect margarita. There’s also a wide array of tequilas available as well as domestic and Mexican draft beers and wines from Guadalupe Valley.

Being a vegetarian myself, I was pleasantly surprised at the offerings. The Loco Vegetarian Taco came stuffed with roasted cauliflower, cipollini onion, portobello, roasted red bell peppers, spinach, roasted potatoes, and a queso asadero. Leave the cheese off for a vegan option.

I appreciate getting insight from the staff as to popular menu choices. A favorite came in the form of Grilled Portobello Mushroom with chorizo, pasilla peppers, friend prosciutoo, queso fresco, and chipotle cream sauce.

Additionally, menu favorites include beer battered shrimp tacos with shredded chicken, chipotle, caramelized onion, and cabbage.

To start the day at Bueno Bueno, the chefs prepares a large, family-style meal for all employees to enjoy. With a covered outdoor patio, you’ll be able to pull up a chair, sip on a margarita, and turn every day into Taco Tuesday. You can’t say “Bueno Bueno” without a smile, and you can’t visit San Juan Capistrano without yummy tacos and historic sights.
