Ralph Breaks the Internet Seriously Rules

Wreck It Ralph was awesome.  The over-sized Ralph sought a chance to be a good guy, and the adorable misfit Vanellope glitched her way to our hearts.  But, you guys, Ralph Breaks the Internet seriously rules.  Read my spoiler free review to find out why.

I participated in a free screening to facilitate this review.

Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) and Vanellope  (voiced by Sarah Silverman) leave behind the comforts of Litwak’s arcades in attempt to save Vanellope’s racing game, Sugar Rush. Can the duo navigate the uncharted territory of thanks to a host of new characters including Netizens, like trend-making Yesss, fast-moving Shank, and know-it-all KnowsMore?

Vanellope is looking for more than the round and round of the well-worn races of her Sugar Rush video game.  Ralph, however, is quite content with his life and best friend status.  The two end up traversing the internet to save Vanellope’s game…and their friendship.

One of the many things Disney Studios does right is the buddy film.  Buzz and Woody, Mike and Sully, Ralph and Vanellope.  Despite drastically different appearances, interests, and personalities, Wreck It Ralph and princess Vanellope von Schweetz make sense together.  Their lighthearted badgering and name calling is endearing.  The dynamic characters are a great reminder that the best friendships evolve.

Bringing in even more characters to the mix, Ralph Breaks the Internet  introduces us to Shank, a gritty racer from Slaughter Race (voiced by Gal Gadot) and Yesss, the lead algorithm at BuzzzTube (voiced by Tariji P. Henson).  And let’s not forget about the princess scene.

Yesss’s character provides internet introspection, something I’m so looking forward to sharing with my girls.  The internet, both in the film and in real life, is a place for animal videos and make-up tutorials.  It’s a place for pie recipes and pop-up ads.  It can also be  a dark place where people’s insecurities come out.  I’ll be reminding my girls how mean comments online made characters feel, how self-doubt can infiltrate our lives.

But it’s also a lighthearted look at internet trends.  We are suckers for online quizzes and blind bag toy videos.

We use Disney movies as conversation starters frequently.  Matt and I challenged the girls to be brave like Rapunzel when leaving their school and start a new life.  We push them to be work hard like Tiana and to defy gender stereotypes like Mulan.  Heck, the Disney princesses have even taught my girls to be kind to animals.  I will argue that there are positive messages to teach modern girls in every Disney princess film, but the past decade has brought so many role models into our lives.  Knowing the pantheon of Disney princesses were going to make an appearance in Ralph Breaks the Internet made me so darn happy.   Seeing them in their loungewear, having a princess slumber party put me over the top.

But let me tell you, there is so much more to the Disney princess scene.  They poke fun at themselves, but also remind us that they rule…and not just their kingdoms.

Get a peek at the film in the official trailer.

Not quite a princess, Shank is a wonder woman that Vanellope idolizes.  Despite her rebellious look, she serves as a strong female role model for Vanellope.

As amazing as Ralph Breaks the Internet is for families, it’s truly a must-see for any Disney fan.  When Ralph and Vanellope enter the Oh My Disney section of the internet, there are pillars for each branch of the Disney universe.  Disney proper, Marvel, Star Wars…it’s all there.  This part of the film is one to watch time and again, trying to catch each cameo and Easter egg.
