Why do we need Solo: A Star Wars Story?

This post may contain affiliate links.  Please read my Disclosure Policy for more information.

To answer this question, I’ll ask another one.  Why does my dad research our family’s ancestry?  There’s value in knowing where we as a family have come from, how we got to this point.  I wondered why my family left behind our Greek roots and changed our surname (besides the obvious “Abramopoulos” is hard to spell).  Learning about my family’s history brings context.  It makes the men and women on my family tree feel like people and not just a series of names and dates.

Solo: A Star Wars Story brings the same context to Han Solo.  The origin story brings depth to the man we have learned to care for in two-hour blocks in the previous films in the Star Wars library, albeit ten two-hour blocks to date.

The film begins with a young Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich).  He is a scrumrat, an orphan, and a survivor.

Han Solo is Aladdin doing what it takes to scrape by.

Han Solo is Oliver Twist, an unnamed orphan struggling in cruel poor houses.

Han Solo is Bruce Springsteen, born to run with a scrappy sarcasm and a good heart.

We’ve learned in previous films that Han Solo is a smuggler who can do the Kessel run in twelve parsecs.  He exhibits softness in his dealings with those he loves, but he’s still a criminal.  Collectively, we as an audience have decided to look past his shady business dealings.  We  love Han Solo (even if shot first).   But when we are introduced to the character, he’s an adult.  Just as I may wonder why my grandfather altered his birth certificate to leave his homeland, we as a Star Wars-loving audience wonder where Han came from.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is our answer.  To know Han in a new way and to understand his beginnings, makes him seem more real.  The heart wrenching loss  in The Force Awakens becomes deeper, more real.  I watched this character grow from a brave orphan to the scoundrel who will do the right thing, even if it is begrudgingly.  I’m invested in him in ways I wonder before. I can’t tell him the odds, but I want things to work out for Han.

Why do we need Solo?

Because we need Han. And knowing the fate that befalls him, this fan is thrilled to have as much Han as I can get.

Why do we need Solo?

Because there are more people in the universe than just Han.

As much as Solo is about its title characters, it’s also Chewie’s origin story.  Yes, it’s the story of Han Solo but Han shares a significant amount of screen time with Chewbacca, as well as new droids and characters.  The relationship between Han Solo and Chewbacca, his Wookie companion, makes a movie about a solo character more of a buddy movie.  Solo: A Star Wars Story details how the salty duo became friends and how the Millennum Falcon became home.

With tinges of social awareness embedded into the plot, new droids bring both talking points and entertainment.  No C-3PO appears on screen, but the L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) is an enlightened droid.  Her interest in droid rights adds complexity.

Lando Calrissian (played by Donald Glover) was smooth and sophisticated.  I do wish I were able to see more of him in Solo, probably because I have serious cape-envy.

Why do we need Solo?

It’s another peek at a character treasured by fans.  Solo: A Story Wars Story answers how the character who grew into Harrison Ford’s Han Solo came to be.  Audiences receive the context fall deeper for in admiration for the smuggler who marries a general, the orphan who become our family.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is now available on blu-ray.  Share your thoughts on the movie in the comments.

In an expo not so far, far away Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek revealed a brand new model of the Disneyland Park’s upcoming Star Wars Land.  This is our first look at what the expansive 14-acre park addition.  2019 can’t come soon enough!

“To say we are excited for the Star Wars-themed lands to open in 2019 is an understatement,” Chapek said. “All along, we have said this will be game-changing, and through the model we can begin to see how truly epic these immersive new worlds will be.”

What we know about Star Wars Land thus far are that it will be an immersive experience, such as newly opened Pandora in Walt Disney World.  This trend in theme parks is to allow guests to feel truly transported, and is one that Walt Disney himself created.  When entering the Disneyland Resort, you enter a magical place with no evidence of the outside world.  I feel confident that Star Wars Land at Disneyland will be that and more.

Since 2015 when Star Wars Land was announced, geeks, I mean fans, like myself have been busy speculating. But now we’ve got some answers.

What We Know About Star Wars Land

Two New Attractions

Chapek has confirmed that there will be two new attractions to anchor the land.  One will allow guests to pilot the  Millennium Falcon on a customized secret mission while the other takes place during middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

An Immersive Experience

STAR WARS-THEMED LAND MODEL AT D23 EXPO — (Joshua Sudock/Disney Parks)

Never has there been a more appropriate franchise for an immersive experience. Star Wars Land  promises to envelope and mesmorize.  The Star Wars story is one that fans take very seriously, and the model reveals a close attention to the aesthetic and feel.

During the Summer Of Heroes, a Marvel-themed collection of offerings and entertainment, guests were able to spend an entire day in the land.  I can only imagine the fun that awaits in the new land.  I probably should get in line now for a themed tumbler.

You can check out the model of Star Wars Land all weekend in the “A Galaxy of Stories” pavilion.  But if you can’t make it to Anaheim, California, I’ve got a sneak peek for you.

As the construction continues, visibility from Disney Way and the Mickey & Friend parking structure will decrease.  But I’ve loved my daily peeks.  Don’t stress if 2019 seems so far, far away.  We’ve still got Star Tours – The Adventure Continues.

Happy Star Wars Day! In celebration of May 4th, I made a DIY BB-8 Hair Clip out of felt.  Some artists mold lumps of clay into works of art; others turn paper and pigmentation into lovely watercolors.  Me? I turn random stuff I find in my house into movie-themed DIY projects.  That’s how these BB-8 clips came to be.

One thing you need to know about BB-8 is that you are never, ever, eveeeeeer allowed to call him by his real name around my 3-year-old.  Her favorite Star Wars characters are “Baby-8” and “Chew-wacka.”  I will do whatever it takes to preserve that adorableness for as long as possible.

But whatever you call him, he’s the droid you’re looking for today and the droid we’re crafting.  Making this required exactly $0.00 from me.  I had all the craft supplies at home and nabbed the hair clip from a dance recital bow that no one was ever going to wear again.

Dance bows…out.  Star Wars…in.  With three girls, my husband is stoked that he’s got three Star Wars fans to bring up.  Check out this super cute Jedi training from a friends’ birthday.

With the popularity of Star Wars among my girls, sometimes we’ve had to be a little crafty. They got custom Star Wars dresses from my mother-in-law (pre-made tank top & a skirt made out of fabric–how genius is this?!?!).  These clips will be perfect for accessorizing their homemade dresses.

How to Make a BB-8 Hair Clip

What You Need:

How to Make the BB-8 Hair Clip

Start by cutting out the pieces from felt.  If cutting small pieces becomes troublesome, you can pin the pattern to the felt.  Your second option is to use the pattern as inspiration and go rogue by free-handing it.

Sew the accent pieces onto the front of BB-8.

Secure the hair clip to the back piece of BB-8.  I opted to sew mine on at an angle, as I was trying to plan how it’d be worn in my hair.  If you use a small clip, horizontally sewing would be great too.

Sew the front and back pieces together, leaving a small section open.

Stuff the BB-8 with stuffing, making sure to fill the head.

Finish sewing BB-8 shut & start impressing your entire galaxy with your adorable hair clip.

These BB-8 hair clips are so fun for showing your love for Star Wars.  I’m anxiously awaiting the opening of Star Wars Land (only two more years to go).  Decking myself and my girls out in DIY fan gear will just have to tide us over.  Until then, may the force be with you!
